Information about Viareggio
Viareggio is an Italian city, placed in the province Lucca in the Toscana. Viareggio is a center of industry (shipbuilding, fisheries), handicrafts and agriculture (floriculture), moreover it is a tourist seaside resort. The Carnival of Viareggio is held here every year, which collects about 200 thousand participants . The city has an eclectic architectural monuments, art nouveau and art deco. Viareggio is considered to be one of the most prestigious and attractive maritime locations of Italy. It is a small and safe city.
The city’s name comes from the Latin name via regis – the name of the road created in the Middle Ages, which combined the coastal fortifications of the town of Lucca. According to some scholars, the name derives from vicus regius – the names of Roman times, which meant a small settlement (Vicus) which, due to membership of the Empire was referred to the name: regius.
The current crest of the city was established in 1848 and survived until today with minor modifications. Previous came from 1752 and represented St. Anthony of Padua, the first patron of the city. The current coat of arms is an anchor with ropes placed on the face of three colors: white, red and green.
Viareggio was one of the first cities, which had three- coloured flag in his coat of arms.
